Australia´s most beautiful beaches it’s said to be in Esperance, Western Australia.
Beaches with sand that soft and fine it squeaks under your feet and that white it hurts your eyes – in a good way.
And that´s exactly how Lucky Bay looks like. Just add super friendly Grey Kangaroos jumping on the beach or chilling in the shade of your car.
Lucky Bay, WA – Kangaroos on the beach
From Perth, you can reach Esperance in between 8-9,5 hours by car or 1,5-hour long flight. Lucky Bay is 45-minute drive east from Esperance in the Cape Le Grand National Park.
The whole coast from Bremer Bay down to Esperance is known by its beautiful and unique beaches. The sand here is so soft, fine and white that it reminds us of icing sugar. When you walk on these clearest beaches it makes squeaking sound underneath your feet! And that´s when you know you are near Esperance:)
What makes Lucky Bay special from all other equally beautiful beaches around are kangaroos.
These little Grey Australian Kangaroos are happily hopping on the beach between people. Most of the time just looking for paddles of fresh water, eating plants and chilling in the shade of someone’s car.

There are few camping spots, where you can camp for 11 AUD per person per night. In this case, you pay only the first day of your stay the Day pass. After that, you pay only the camping fee.
We found and heard from other people as well, that trying to get the camping spot is not easy at all!
First of all, Cape Le Grand is a quite popular place between tourist so the demand for camping site is high. And secondly, the system how to book yourself a place seems to be pretty confusing.
There is supposed to be an online website where you should go and book a spot.
But what we heard, very often even tho you book the spot online, when you physically get there, the campgrounds are full anyway. That´s because campsites are being sold on the spot as well to people who arrive early in the morning.
Although we haven´t even tried to get ourselves a spot in these campsites as we prefer to camp on the beach on our own.
Just keep in your mind that free camping is prohibited in National Parks and in most of the towns as well.

The best time to visit Lucky Bay in Esperance, Western Australia is anytime between late spring till early autumn. The winter can be really cold down south so try to avoid that season.

Best time to visit Lucky Bay – kangaroos
We went to Esperance in April 2019 and spent here over a week. And because I (Maky) was endlessly in love with the sand, the ocean and mainly kangaroos, we were in Lucky Bay every day at least once!
The best time according to us for seeing kangaroos is anywhere between 8 am till 2 pm. Early in the morning and later in the afternoon they seem to be sleeping in the bush or god knows what they are doing:D
We would go there early in the morning, watch the sunrise and dolphins jumping in the waves.
We would have breakfast and enjoy ourselves on the empty beach before all the tourists come.
Around 8 am kangaroos start coming on the beach and look for some fresh water and plants to eat.
As the sun is getting stronger, kangaroos are looking for shade and every time they would come to us and sleep under our car in the shadow.
4WD driving Lucky Bay
Lucky Bay is perfect for driving your car and find yourself a secluded place on the beach for the day. When we were there, the sand was really hard and you wouldn´t need a 4WD. Any 2WD car could drive on this beach.
But keep in mind that beach conditions change all the time and you need to check beforehand the current situation.
If you decide to drive on the beach, drive with caution please as there are many people and kangaroos:)
Feeding kangaroos in Lucky Bay
Even tho these kangaroos are super friendly, they are still completely wild animals!
It´s prohibited feed them as they can get seriously sick from human food. As well it´s important for wild animals to be able to find their own food and not to get used to being fed from humans.
